Lawyers Provide Local Troops and Families a "Holiday for Heroes"
On December 18, 2008, officers and members of the Montgomery Bar Association and local law firms made a special presentation to the USO at Naval Air Station Willow Grove, helping to ensure a happy holiday for locally-based troops and their families. Armed with gift cards, international calling cards, toys and financial contributions to the USO, the attorneys presented the gifts to Diane Kelly, NAS USO with the Base Commanding Officer Captain David Opatz in attendance.
For consecutive years, attorneys from the Chartwell Law Offices of Valley Forge, PA and the Montgomery Bar have organized to collect gifts as part of a grassroots campaign they have titled “Holidays for Heroes.” Robert Morris, President of the Montgomery Bar Association, stated that it was important for the legal community to support the troops as they put their lives on the line every day to ensure our wellbeing and to preserve our precious freedoms. Captain Opatz responded how grateful he was for the thoughtfulness of the attorneys and how important it was in keeping the morale of the troops high as it ensured a happy holiday for all assigned to the Base including those deployed around the world. Among other significant contributors, the Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section and Inns of Court collected toys and cash donations of over $500 at their annual holiday party. Significant contributions were also made by Shop Rite of Warminster and One Village Coffee, a Franconia-based coffee company, that prepared a unique holiday coffee for the troops called “Heroes Blend.” In total, local attorneys were able to gather contributions and in-kind gifts for the USO and for distribution to the troops totaling over $20,000.
So far, during the 2008 holiday season, MBA lawyers and member law firms have collected and donated gifts and in-kind contributions exceeding $20,000 for locally deployed troops and their families.
