Players and Sponsors Wanted for July 8th Legal Aid Golf Classic at RiverCrest
The Montgomery Bar Association (MBA) is looking for players in the community to come out for its 2008 Legal Aid Golf Classic on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve in Oaks, PA. The event will begin with a continental breakfast at 7 AM and a shotgun start at 8 AM. This is at a time when Legal Aid is in desperate need of support to help those less fortunate in our community.
The Legal Aid Golf Classic is one of the MBA’s most popular annual events. Proceeds from this year’s event will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Montgomery Bar Association and will directly benefit Legal Aid in Montgomery County. Legal Aid is an area non-profit that provides pro bono civil legal services to low-income persons, victims of domestic abuse and neglect, and the elderly in our area and is one of several causes that count on the ongoing support of the Montgomery Bar and its members to help those in need. This year’s Golf Classic arrives at a particularly critical time as Legal Aid in Montgomery County will lose over $100,000 in IOLTA funding beginning July 1 due to the drop in interest rates. According to Legal Aid Co-Director Harvey Strauss, “We as a community share the burden and responsibility of ensuring the doors of our justice system remain open to all. Making a small contribution, sponsoring a hole or coming out to play a round of golf with local lawyers, judges, businesspeople, friends or family on Tuesday, July 8th can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.”
At the end of 2007, MBA leadership presented a check in the amount of $23,000 to Legal Aid of Southeastern Pennsylvania (LASP). This amount represented the balance of $40,000 committed annually by the Bar Association to support Legal Aid operations in Montgomery County. In addition to the $40,000 received from the Association, thousands more are donated by the Bar each year in free, state-required legal education. According to Strauss, “Financial contributions by [MBA] member attorneys and the MBA amounted to nearly $100,000 in 2007.” Strauss adds, “This is a significant number considering many of the same Montgomery County lawyers volunteered over of 1100 hours of pro bono service to our organization that same year.”
The MBA urges your support and the support of local businesses for this important cause. Sponsorship and golf opportunities are available at all levels. This year, there’s even an opportunity for beginning golfers to participate (no clubs required) while receiving golf lessons from an LPGA Pro and certified instructor. Sponsorship and participation in the Legal Aid Classic starts at just $150 and includes a continental breakfast, refreshments, 18 holes of golf (or lessons for beginners), a buffet luncheon, and the chance to win one of many great prizes from local restaurants, retailers and suppliers.
