MBA Launches Fifth Annual Summer 1L Diversity Internship Program

Norristown, PA – On June 3, 2013, the Montgomery Bar Association’s (MBA’s) Diversity Committee launched its fifth annual Summer 1L Diversity Internship program.  The program provides paid internships to first year law students of diverse backgrounds and is one of several programs launched by the MBA to promote diversity throughout Montgomery County’s legal community.

Participation and interest in the Summer 1L Diversity Internship program has grown steadily since its inception. This summer, ten (10) highly qualified students will be placed in law offices throughout Montgomery County.  The program will run for eight weeks with each student receiving a stipend of $500.00 per week, paid by participating law firms.  As added incentive for student participation, the MBA awarded a $1,000.00 scholarship to each participating intern in 2012 as well as in previous years.

Throughout the internship, the Bar Association’s Diversity Committee will co-sponsor weekly events with a featured speaker.  This year’s lineup will include: Working at a Law Firm by Marilou Watson, Esquire; Clerking For a Court of Common Pleas Judge by the Honorable Cheryl Austin; Clerking for an Appellate Court Judge by the Honorable Susan Peikes Gantman; Working in a Public Defender’s Office by Montgomery County Public Defender Keir Bradford Grey; Working in a District Attorney’s Office by Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman and Working as In-house Counsel by Eric Meyers, Esquire.  These events are also made possible through generous donations from the law firms of Cozen O’Connor; Fox Rothschild LLP; Morris & Clemm PC; Kaplan Stewart; Marshall Dennehey Warner Coleman & Goggin; Powell, Trachtman, Logan, Carrle & Lombardo; and Rudolph, Clark & Kirk, LLC.

The MBA partners with the Philadelphia Diversity Law Group in locating students to participate in the program.  This year the following firms will again be participating in the program and sponsoring a student:  Flamm Walton PC; Fox Rothschild LLP; High Swartz LLP; Kane, Pugh, Knoell, Troy & Kramer, LLP; Miller, Turetsky, Rule & McLennan; Nelson, Levine, deLuca & Hamilton; Portnoff Law Associates; Snyder & Verbeke; Weber, Gallagher, Simpson, Stapleton, Fires & Newby, LLP and Wisler Pearlstine LLP.

The Diversity Committee is currently chaired by Mohammed Ghiasuddin with Lindette Hassan serving as vice chair.  This year, Wendy G. Rothstein, Esquire is chair of the Summer 1L Diversity Internship program.
