MBA is Seeking a New Executive Director
Special Announcement

To the Members of the Montgomery Bar Association,

It is my duty as President to advise the membership of significant developments that affect our Association, and that is the purpose of this message today. I write to inform our membership that our extraordinary Executive Director, Nancy Paul, who has served our Association for nearly thirty years, and who has been absolutely instrumental in its development, growth, and advancement over that time, has notified the Board of Directors of her intention to retire during the course of this calendar year. While there is no firm date for Nancy’s departure, and she has expressed her intention to assist the association in any way desired or necessary with the transition to a new executive director, this is obviously a matter of great significance.

The leadership of the association has already undertaken steps to solicit applicants from across the nation through numerous forums, including the National Association of Bar Executives, the American Society of Association Executives, and various other employment channels. Those applicants will initially be reviewed by a small committee of individuals who have been selected by the officers, whereupon that committee will recommend several candidates for consideration by the full board of directors. We have imposed a deadline of February 25, 2020 for the submission of applications, and we are hopeful this timeline will enable the board to make a final decision by the middle of March.

If you know of an individual who may be suitable to fulfill this very important role, I invite you to encourage that individual to review the criteria for the position, as well as the instructions for submitting application materials, at the following website:

In closing, I want to assure our membership that this is a challenge that we are prepared to meet.  I have total and complete confidence in the present leadership of our association to proceed with this undertaking in a transparent, diligent, and competent manner and we fully intend to do just that.  I thank you for your continued support and involvement during this period of transition.

Patrick J. Kurtas
President - Montgomery Bar Association

Montgomery County High School Mock Trials Are Underway - Volunteer Jurors Needed!
Mock Trials

Each year, our Young Lawyers Section coordinates the Montgomery County (Region 9) portion of the statewide High School Mock Trial Competition. One of the largest in the nation, over 300 high school teams from across the state have the opportunity to act as lawyers and witnesses in simulated civil and criminal trials before actual judges and panels of juries.

This year, 34 teams will be competing in Montgomery County alone. As an attorney, you have the unique opportunity to provide valuable feedback and instruction to student competitors by serving as a volunteer juror during the competition. Those who have participated in the past can attest to the talent and skill of these students, some of which have gone on to a career in law (and are current MBA members!).

We are in need of volunteer jurors and timekeepers on the following dates:

  • Thursday, February 6th - 2 Sessions (3:30 PM & 5:30 PM)
  • Tuesday, February 11th - 2 Sessions (3:30 PM & 5:30 PM)
  • Thursday, February 13th - 2 Sessions (3:30 PM & 5:30 PM)
  • Thursday, February 27th - 3:30 PM
  • Tuesday, March 3rd - 3:30 PM

As you can see, we are in special need of jurors during the first two weeks (2/6, 2/11, 2/13) when the most trials take place. If you can make any of these dates, please click the button below to sign up. All trials take place at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown.

Spotlight on Diversity - Summer 1L Sponsors Needed and Meeting on Feb. 11th
Summer 1L Diversity Program

As President Kurtas discussed at the Annual Business Luncheon, the MBA places high priority on the success of its diversity initiatives. The cornerstone of our diversity program is the Robert E. Slota, Jr. Summer 1L Diversity Program and we are about to kick in high gear to make it the most successful year yet. In order to make that happen, we need YOUR participation! Opportunities for support include hosting a highly-qualified diverse intern throughout the 8-week program, splitting the internship with another firm (each firm hosting for 4-weeks), sponsoring the program, and/or covering the cost of hosting an intern working for one of our judges or other public interest attorneys. Please contact Nancy Walsh (nancy@tbdnowllc.com; 215-896-6970) for more information on how you can help. Don’t miss the opportunity to be a part of this important program!

The MBA Diversity Committee continues to grow!

If you'd like to be a part of the exciting work we are doing, please consider joining us for our second meeting of the year on Tuesday, February 11th at 8:30 AM. We will be discussing our Summer 1L Diversity program, the Day in Court program, our collaboration with PBA's Minority Bar Committee's upcoming Diversity Summit, exciting CLE's, community outreach activities, and more. Come, bring a friend, and help us make things happen!
