MBA Issues Statement on Violence Against the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community
MBA Logo

The Montgomery Bar Association (MBA) strongly condemns the violent and hateful acts against members of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. Although violence against the AAPI community is not new, recent media attention, particularly around the horrific mass shooting in Atlanta, has brought the issue into our nation's consciousness. We offer our sincere condolences to the victims of all hate crimes and their families. The MBA stands in solidarity with the AAPI community, and we encourage anyone who suffers or witnesses any such acts of violence, intimidation, or hate speech to step up and speak out.

As an association of attorneys focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, it is our obligation to ensure that we do everything in our power to end racism, bias, or hatred of any sort, and to ensure equal and fair access to justice for everyone in our community.

May 5, 2021 - 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Family Law Section Presents: Staying Safe and Sound - Maintaining a Work/Life Balance in Uncertain Times
Featuring Brian S. Quinn, Esq.

We know that you have been bombarded with messages about the Coronavirus, whether that be on television, social media, or in your community networks. In uncertain times like these, anxiety, stress, fear and negative thoughts can easily take control. You may be worried about being in crowds, getting a vaccine for you and your loved ones, your office, your clients, your finances or how to manage whatever the future holds as we prepare to return to the "new normal" in our personal and professional lives.

Recent studies have shown that there has been a dramatic increase in impairment due to alcoholism, addiction and mental health disorders among members of the legal profession. The statistics are compelling and clearly indicate that 1 out of 3 attorneys will likely have a need for substance use or mental health services at some point in their careers. Accordingly, unexpected events like those we are facing as a society will have an even greater impact on lawyers and those who work with them.

In light of this unprecedented crisis and it's far- reaching impact, our panel will discuss:

  • Well- being strategies to reduce or alleviate these conditions and maintain a healthy work/life balance.
  • Why legal professionals are at higher risk to develop mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Challenges and barriers facing legal professionals from seeking help
