Few things are more stressful than a day in court. For jurors and litigants, the strain of a trial can be enormous. For law enforcement, victims facing their abusers and for those traumatized by events in which they’re forced to testify, a day in court can be downright scary. From the unease of the security check upon entering, to the cold, cavernous hallways and emotionally charged courtroom testimony --there’s just not a lot of comfort in a day in court.
Members of Montgomery County's legal community and arts community have recently come together to help lighten this load and minimize stress "creatively" through a collaborative initiative called Courting Art. Conceived and led by the Montgomery Bar Association and members of its Community Outreach Committee, Courting Art encompasses a series of annual community-sponsored art contests and exhibitions, aimed at promoting a more comfortable, visitor-friendly Courthouse experience for the tens of thousands who have occasion to spend time there each year.
For last year's inaugural contest and exhibition, "What I Love About Montgomery County", we invited Montgomery County artists (age 55+) to create and submit original paintings and mixed media for a special art exhibition and contest at the Fine Arts Center (a/k/a: the Art Barn) at Montgomery County Community College.
120 pieces of art were displayed during last year's 3-day Courting Art Exhibition and approximately 40 pieces took home prizes. Our esteemed panel of judges included among others; sitting judges from Pennsylvania's 38th Judicial District's Court of Common Pleas. In total, over $4,500 in prizes were awarded to dozens of talented resident artists. Following the exhibition, all art was returned to its creators and winners were be notified. A giclée reproduction of each winning piece was then produced by North Penn Art in Lansdale at the expense of the Bar Association and its sponsors. These high quality reproductions were then hung in the Montgomery County Court House, where they'll remain indefinitely for visitors to enjoy. Artists were again honored at a special courthouse dedication ceremony and their winning works were featured in a full-color newspaper insert that followed.
New for 2014
Thanks to the success of last year's program; the generosity of Montgomery County Community College and our sponsors and public demand, a month-long Courting Art Exhibition will take place May 8 - June 12 at the Fine Arts Center. This feature exhibition will be promoted to the public and will be free of charge during regular gallery hours. A private, Opening Night VIP Reception and Media Event will take place on Wednesday evening, May 7th for participating artists, sponsors, invited guests and dignitaries and members of the news media. Here, prizes will be announced for dozens of award-winning entries and invited guests will have an opportunity to preview this year's Exhibition.

All art will be juried prior to the exhibition and contest and all artwork on display at the exhibition will be eligible for prizes. A single giclée reproduction of each winning entry will again be produced and hung on our Court House walls. Reproductions of all winning artwork will be accompanied by an attractive plaque, ensuring each artist's creative contribution and artistic legacy will be admired and appreciated for generations to come.
