LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER! Legal Aid Golf Classic - June 26th at Green Valley Country Club       

Just a few spots remain for the 2023 Legal Aid Golf Classic, which will be held this Monday, June 26, 2023 at Green Valley Country Club (201 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA 19444) and will once again be held in the afternoon with a shotgun start at 1:30 PM, followed by a fundraising dinner at 6:30 PM featuring raffle prizes and the presentation of the Montgomery Bar Foundation's Community Service Awards.  Just a few spots remain for golf so be sure to register ASAP if you are playing.

Now Seeking Nominations for Montgomery Bar Foundation Awards

The Montgomery Bar Foundation is now accepting nominations for the following awards: 

The Honorable Milton O. Moss Public Service Award is bestowed annually upon a Montgomery County resident who has rendered distinguished service in support of the justice system.

The Honorable Louis D. Stefan Law Enforcement Award is given to a law enforcement official in Montgomery County who exceeds the scope of his or her duties in promoting the rule of law and administration of justice.

Please submit your nomination, along with a brief explanation of why the individual or organization should receive the award, to Denise S. Vicario, Esq. at denise@montgomerybar.org no later than Wednesday, Monday, May 15, 2023.  These awards will be presented at the MBF Dinner (immediately following the Legal Aid Golf Classic) on Monday, June 26, 2023, 6:30 PM at Green Valley Country Club (201 Ridge Pike, Lafayette Hill, PA 19444)

May Month of Service Continues

Our Young Lawyers Section is once again organizing a Month of Service in May.  Thank you to all who have volunteered so far!  We are still looking for volunteers (all members welcome!) for the following initiatives and events:

MEALS ON WHEELS

Kicking off in May, the YLS will be coordinating delivery for Meals on Wheels on the 4th Monday of every month.  We'll need volunteers to help pick up and deliver meals to members of our community in need.  Click here to sign up
 

EPIC PROGRAM

The award-winning EPIC program was designed to stabilize vulnerable families and individuals in Montgomery County who are facing eviction by providing them with free legal and social services support on the date of their eviction hearing.  It is anticipated that the need for volunteers will skyrocket in the coming months.  Accordingly, the MBA will be hosting a CLE for anyone interested in volunteering for the program on Wednesday, May 31st, 8:30 AM - 10:00 AM. Registration fee will be refunded to those who volunteer.  Click here to register.


CRADLES TO CRAYONS DRIVE

We are also hosting a drive this month for Cradles to Crayons. Walsh Pancio, LLC in Lansdale and the Sherr Law Group in Norristown are the current drop-off locations. You can also bring donations the MBA.

  • Clothing (infant to youth sizes 18/20 and adult sizes small & medium)
  • New socks and underwear
  • New or gently used pajamas
  • Winter coats, hats, gloves/mittens
  • Sweatshirts/hoodies and sweatpants
  • Shoes, boots, and sneakers (toddler sizes 4–13 and adult sizes 1–10)
  • Books (ages 0-12)
  • New arts, crafts, and school supplies
  • New hygiene items
  • Unopened diapers, pull-ups, and diaper wipes

 If you are unable to donate any of the above-mentioned items, monetary donations are also accepted.

Volunteer attorneys appear in court to help those facing eviction. It is anticipated that the need for volunteers will skyrocket in coming months. This CLE will teach you the basics of appearing in landlord-tenant court and how to volunteer for EPIC.  Please join us for this CLE, which includes coffee & refreshments.

CLE - Mine! How the Hidden Rules of Ownership Control Our Lives

According to the authors, "by the time we grow up, the idea of ownership seems natural, whether we are buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you reclining or the squished laptop user behind you? Why does HBO look the other way when you illegally borrow a password to stream their shows? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair in the street hold your parking space in Chicago, but in New York you lose the space and the chair?"

CLE - Title IX: The Campus Disciplinary Process in Higher Education

This CLE is sponsored by the Women in Law Committee and open to all attorneys. The presenters will cover a broad range of topics covering Title IX compliance, investigations, and the disciplinary process in higher education. This CLE will feature an introduction and overview of Title IX and its evolution over the years with a focus on the highly anticipated Title IX regulations that are expected to be released by the Biden Administration in May 2023. The presentation will also cover the very important role of Title IX coordinator on a college campus, and the role of outside counsel in the Title IX disciplinary process. Attendees can expect to receive practical guidelines to the disciplinary process that includes: 1) investigations; 2) hearings; and the 3) resolution of disputes.

CLE - Stuff Ya Can't Learn in Law School: Practice Points for Young Lawyers and Law Students

This comprehensive presentation will draw on the experiences of 3-4 MBA Leadership Academy graduates, who will introduce and describe various practice tips for younger attorneys. The seminar will cover a number of areas essential to a successful legal practice that aren't usually taught in law school, including business and client development, mastering client and colleague interaction, internal marketing, proactivity, maintaining a work life balance, getting work you want, and more. The presenters will draw on their own real-life examples to demonstrate behavior and practices that lead to a more productive career, and conversely, those which tend to increase stress and anxiety among younger attorneys.
